Adolphe had good news for us. One of his clients worked for the Jugendamt. His office had received the documents from the judge, conveying the final decision to sentence me to a Nazi educational home. Adolphe’s client promised to put the order under a big pile of pending documents. When it would come up, he would put it further down in the pile. And, he added, “Maybe the Russians will end the war before it goes through.” At any rate, he would at least try to hold the request until all the trees had sprouted green leaves.

One day, an official paper appeared in our mailbox stating “Gefahr liegt im Verzug.” This was a typical Nazi legal term meaning that the judgment would be carried out by the corresponding authorities, the Jugendamt, the official court for minors. The court would determine placement, notify the Bürgermeisteramt, and then execute the transfer. The judge’s quick response indicated that his bitterness had turned caustic. Mum, Marcel, and Adolphe helped me to accept my new situation positively. Each day’s tasks and worries were sufficient; that was Jesus’ counsel, and I had to learn how to apply it during those dark days.
